So my daughter, who is 17, graduated from high school, gainfully employed, and en route to college, says at dinner tonight,
"Growing up in this family, and in this community, I only realized very recently that the label "conservative" is not necessarily pejorative, and that there are people who voluntarily identify THEMSELVES as conservative and see that as a GOOD thing!"
"Sweetie," I said, "those people think 'liberal' is a derogatory term."
"Well, I understand that NOW," she said, in a slightly huffy tone of voice. "But how would anyone growing up in this house know that?"

LOL What a great conversation!
Wonderful that your friend's daughter had a wedding on the solstice under the full strawberry moon - an auspicious (sp?) start to be sure.
LMAO
on the floor no less....
Oh just wait until she gets to that Southern college. She'll be living in a whole different world.... though hopefully will be somewhat insulated from it on a college campus. My daughter will be experiencing the opposite situation. After living for the last 8 years in Texas where the word liberal is said with complete contempt, she'll finally be in an environment where being a "liberal" will not put her at odds with the rest of the world (Vermont). We've actually discussed the fact that being a liberal is not considered to be a bad thing in other places, a totally foreign concept to my children. Stacy
